The Symptoms: Sea Lavender – or the euphoria of beeing
The Symptoms is one of the most influential independent contemporary dance and theatre companies of Hungary, performing since 2002. Their artistic director Réka Szabó has started an incredible project two years ago by inviting Éva Fahidi, the then 90-year-old Auschwitz-Birkenau survivor to the stage in order to perform an intimate duet with young dancer Emese Cuhorka. The piece questions whether personal experiences can be passed on, and whether it is possible to grasp the problems of a young person today by someone like Éva? Could they perform their Grand Dance Duet?
There has been 55 performances so far.

Nominated by Viktória Hitka:
“Although the performance was not made specifically for this year, it has somehow avoided the curators’ attention, and since it is on show this year, I feel it is still relevant. The whole story is amazing, Emese and Eva’s movements are the parallels of laughter and crying. History, present and future in one. We would live in a much better society if we would talked about anything the way this performance does.”
